Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, known for his influential works in Bollywood, discussed the modern landscape of filmmaking in a recent interview with Variety India. His notable 2014 satirical science fiction film, PK, tackled themes of superstition and deceit among self-proclaimed prophets. In light of contemporary challenges, Hirani shared insights on the feasibility of creating a film like PK today.
In his remarks, Hirani highlighted the pressures faced by filmmakers in the current environment. He noted that public comments and criticisms are a significant concern. “Times keep changing,” he stated, emphasizing that worries over negative feedback can overwhelm the creative process. He cautioned that becoming overly cautious in response to criticism can lead to a troubling situation for artists.
The director underscored the importance of honesty in filmmaking. According to Hirani, creating a film with authenticity is essential, regardless of the anticipated reactions. He advised filmmakers to pursue their vision with conviction rather than attempt to play it safe. “You can’t start diluting your beliefs; that’s a scary place to be in,” he remarked, asserting that true creativity thrives on genuine expression.
Hirani’s film PK featured an ensemble cast, including Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, the late Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla, and Sanjay Dutt. The film was well-received and sparked discussions on its themes of belief and skepticism.
Looking ahead, Hirani is set to collaborate with Aamir Khan once more on a biopic about Dadasaheb Phalke, who is celebrated as the father of Indian cinema. However, this project is reportedly on hold due to creative differences between the parties involved.
In addition to PK, Hirani’s latest directorial endeavor was Dunki, released in 2023. This comedy-drama delves into the controversial method of illegal immigration known as “donkey flight,” featuring stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, Anil Grover, and Vikram Kochar. Notably, actor Vicky Kaushal also made a special appearance in the film.
Rajkumar Hirani has previously directed a range of successful films, including Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots, and Sanju, each leaving a significant impact on Hindi cinema. His films are characterized by a blend of humor and poignant social commentary, making him a prominent figure within the industry.
