Daryl Mitchell’s outstanding performance propelled New Zealand to a seven-wicket victory over India in the second One-Day International (ODI), leveling the three-match series at 1-1. Scoring an unbeaten 131 runs off 117 balls, Mitchell’s contribution was crucial in securing the win.
After winning the toss, New Zealand chose to field first, restricting India to a total of 284 runs for 7 wickets in Rajkot. The visitors successfully chased down the target with 15 balls to spare, setting up a decisive third match in the series.
Mitchell entered the game at a challenging moment for New Zealand, who were struggling at 46-2. He forged a significant partnership with Will Young, combining for 162 runs, a notable effort that saw Mitchell dropped on 80 by Prasidh Krishna before reaching his eighth ODI century.
Young also played a vital role, scoring 87 runs before he was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav, top-edging a delivery that was caught by Nitish Kumar Reddy. Despite the valiant efforts from India’s bowlers, it was insufficient to thwart New Zealand’s chase, with Mitchell and Glenn Phillips adding the finishing touches to achieve New Zealand’s highest ODI run chase in India.
Post-match, Mitchell expressed his satisfaction with the win, stating, “We haven’t won here for a couple of years. Nice to get a win. I am just enjoying doing the job for the country.” He lauded Young’s skills, mentioning their effective partnerships and enjoyment while batting together.
Earlier in the match, India’s batting lineup faced a setback when Kristian Clarke claimed three critical wickets, dismissing star players Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, and Virat Kohli. KL Rahul stood out as the backbone of India’s innings, scoring an impressive 112 runs off 92 balls. He partnered with Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy to stabilize the innings, marking his eighth ODI century and achieving his highest score in the format.
India captain Shubman Gill reflected on the team’s performance, acknowledging the good start with the ball but critiquing the middle overs, stating, “We did get a decent start with the ball, but they batted very well in the middle overs.” He noted the conditions in the first stages of the match but suggested that the team could have been more aggressive in their approach.
The series now moves to the decisive third match, which will take place in Indore. Both teams are also preparing for a five-match T20I series following the ODIs, ahead of next month’s Twenty20 World Cup.
