MS Dhoni, former captain of India’s cricket team and a legendary figure in the sport, has successfully undergone knee surgery, according to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan. The surgery took place at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai, and while specific details remain scarce, Dhoni is reportedly recovering well.
Following the IPL 2023 final, where CSK secured their fifth title against Gujarat Titans, Dhoni traveled to Mumbai for the procedure. He consulted Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, a respected sports orthopaedic surgeon who has treated several prominent Indian cricketers. Reports indicate that Dhoni is expected to be discharged soon and will enter a period of rest before beginning extensive rehabilitation. With this timeline, he may have a chance to participate in the next IPL season.
During the 2023 season, Dhoni scored 104 runs over 12 innings, averaging 26 with an impressive strike rate above 182. His top score was 32 not out, with notable performances that included three fours and ten sixes. However, recurring knee issues affected his mobility, evident in his struggle between the wickets and a noticeable limp.
Recently, in a post-match presentation, Dhoni reflected on his career, hinting at the possibility of one more season as a gesture for his fans. He acknowledged the support he’s received throughout his journey, suggesting that a return to the IPL would be a way to give back to them. “If you circumstantially see it, it’s the best time to announce retirement. But with the amount of love I have received from CSK fans, it would be a gift for them to play one more season,” he stated.
Dhoni’s impact on cricket extends beyond his impressive statistics. He is hailed as one of India’s greatest players, with an international career from 2004 to 2019 that includes 17,266 runs at an average of 44.96, along with 16 centuries and 108 fifties. His most notable achievements have come in ODIs, where he scored 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57, alongside a high strike rate.
In terms of wicketkeeping, Dhoni is recognized as the third-most successful in international cricket history, with 829 dismissals, following Adam Gilchrist and Mark Boucher. His quick stumpings have made him a standout behind the stumps.
Furthermore, Dhoni is the only captain to have led India to victory in all major ICC tournaments, including the T20 World Cup, Cricket World Cup, and Champions Trophy. Under his leadership, CSK also clinched five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles, solidifying his legacy both in India and around the world.
