Qatar’s Nasser Al-Attiyah claimed his sixth Dakar Rally car title in Saudi Arabia, while Luciano Benavides secured the bike championship by a razor-thin margin of just two seconds. This year’s event showcased the intense competition and dramatic turns typical of the iconic rally.
Al-Attiyah, driving a Dacia, successfully navigated the final day of the rally to maintain his lead after achieving 50 stage wins earlier in the competition. The 55-year-old driver has previous victories in 2011, 2015, 2019, 2022, and now 2023, solidifying his place in Dakar history.
In the bike category, Argentina’s Benavides claimed first place, edging out Honda’s Ricky Brabec, a two-time champion, in a thrilling finish. The KTM rider’s solid performance in the closing stage was crucial, allowing him to clinch his first Dakar title.
Reflecting on his victory, Benavides expressed how he had dreamt of this moment for as long as he could remember. His decisive action during the race turned the tide when Brabec encountered difficulties, taking a wrong route close to the end of the 105km stage around Yanbu. This fortunate turn for Benavides enabled him to take advantage and secure his position.
On the last day, Edgar Canet triumphed in the bike stage, while Spain’s Tosha Schareina finished third, securing the same position in the overall standings. The competitive spirit among the riders was evident throughout the rally, culminating in a nail-biting conclusion.
Benavides dedicated the win to his determination and hard work throughout the rally, affirming his belief in his chances leading up to the event. With previous successes in the family, as his brother Kevin had won the marathon race in 2021 and 2023, this victory adds to the Benavides legacy in the sport.
Overall, this year’s Dakar Rally once again illustrated the resilience and skill of its competitors, culminating in a spectacular showdown for both car and bike titles.
