Newcastle Faces Tough FA Cup Reality as Chelsea Escapes close Call

Manchester City advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals with a commanding 3-1 victory over Newcastle, despite making ten changes to their lineup. Meanwhile, Chelsea overcame Wrexham, who played with ten men, in a thrilling encounter that also saw them progress.

Arsenal, the Premier League leaders, continued their pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple by defeating Mansfield Town 2-1 in their fifth-round match. Their victory marked a significant step towards retaining their FA Cup title, as they successfully navigated a challenging match against the third-tier side.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City fielded a drastically changed side from their recent Premier League draw against Nottingham Forest, retaining only Matheus Nunes. Newcastle’s manager, Eddie Howe, made four adjustments to his team following their recent success against Manchester United, with Will Osula, who scored the game-winning goal in that match, earning a start.

In the early stages at St James’ Park, Newcastle took control, with Harvey Barnes scoring first after a well-placed assist from Sandro Tonali. However, City equalized shortly before halftime in a peculiar moment, when Jeremy Doku’s cross inadvertently found its way to Savinho, who let the ball bounce off him and into the net.

The second half saw City assert their dominance, starting with Omar Marmoush’s goal shortly after the break, followed by a second goal from him in the 65th minute. Guardiola, readying his squad for a Champions League clash against Real Madrid, utilized his deep bench to maintain momentum and keep his team competitive as they strive for their fourth consecutive FA Cup final appearance. In discussing the match, Guardiola expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, calling it their best at the stadium during his tenure.

On the other side of the FA Cup draw, Chelsea progressed with a 4-2 victory over Wrexham after a dramatic match that showcased the determination of the lower-league side. Wrexham, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, took the lead through a goal from Sam Smith, only for Chelsea to level with an own goal just before halftime.

The back-and-forth continued in the second half, as Wrexham regained the lead through Callum Doyle. Chelsea responded quickly with Josh Acheampong finding the net to equalize just minutes later. The match shifted when Wrexham’s George Dobson received a red card in stoppage time, allowing Chelsea to capitalize. Alejandro Garnacho scored during the first period of extra time, and Joao Pedro capped the match with a late goal.

Chelsea’s manager, Liam Rosenior, acknowledged that his team was fortunate but lauded Wrexham’s spirited performance. He emphasized the unpredictability that makes the FA Cup so fascinating. Wrexham’s manager Phil Parkinson reflected positively on his team’s effort and skill throughout the match, suggesting they have a strong foundation for future challenges.

Earlier in the day, Arsenal secured their spot in the next round as Eberechi Eze scored a decisive goal against Mansfield Town. Noni Madueke initially put Arsenal ahead, but the League One side equalized shortly after the break. Eze’s powerful strike, following his introduction as a substitute, ultimately sealed the victory for the Gunners, furthering their FA Cup aspirations.
