Pegula Dominates Anisimova to Secure Spot in Dubai Final

Jessica Pegula continues to impress with her exceptional performance on the tennis court. Recently, she made a remarkable comeback to defeat her fellow American Amanda Anisimova 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, securing her spot in the final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

This victory marks Pegula’s second final appearance in a WTA event since August 2025. Notably, during her five tournament appearances since then, she has reached at least the semifinals in high-profile competitions, including the US Open and the Australian Open.

The 31-year-old attributes her success to the diligent preparation and effort invested alongside her coaching team since 2025. Pegula’s resilience shone through on the Dubai Centre Court, particularly when she found herself overwhelmed by Anisimova’s powerful play in the first set.

Anisimova, who finished as a runner-up at Wimbledon and the US Open last year, appeared to be on track for an easy victory when she opened the second set with a 3-1 lead. However, Pegula reversed the momentum by breaking Anisimova’s serve twice, clinching the second set and pushing the match into a decisive third set.

In the final set, Pegula secured an important break in the fourth game, allowing her to take control of the match. She maintained her composure to extend her perfect head-to-head record against Anisimova to 5-0. Reflecting on the match, Pegula commented on the difficulty of the turnaround, emphasizing her determination to hold her serve and gain momentum.

This win was also Pegula’s second consecutive victory over Anisimova, having previously triumphed in their quarterfinal match at the Australian Open last month. Despite the lopsided head-to-head record, Pegula acknowledges the competitive nature of their encounters.

The upcoming final will see Pegula face Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, a two-time champion in Dubai. Pegula shared her thoughts on this matchup, noting their similar playing styles and the challenges they each present to one another. She described the dynamic as balancing aggression with caution, given Svitolina’s solid defense and movement.

On another note, the doubles final will feature Russia’s Vera Zvonareva and Germany’s Laura Siegemund against the Canadian-German duo of Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani. Zvonareva and Siegemund secured their spot by defeating the Romanian pair of Jaqueline Cristian and Elena-Gabriela Ruse, while Dabrowski and Stefani triumphed over Aleksandra Krunić and Anna Danilina.

With the finals approaching, the excitement around the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is palpable as fans await thrilling matchups in both singles and doubles categories.
