Gopinath, the last player of India’s first Test team, dies

Chingleput Gopinath, the last surviving member of India’s historic first Test team, has passed away at the age of 96, according to a statement from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). His legacy in Indian cricket remains significant.

Gopinath was recognized as the second-oldest living cricketer, just behind Australia’s Neil Harvey. His contributions were pivotal during a challenging period for Indian cricket, which faced a long wait for its first Test victory.

Before clinching their first win, India struggled in the early years of Test cricket, losing all six series they had participated in. Their debut came with a match against England, where they drew their first encounters against various teams, yet the elusive victory took nearly two decades to achieve.

The breakthrough came during the 1951-52 series when England toured India for five matches. Although the first three Tests ended in draws, England managed to win the fourth Test by eight wickets. However, in a remarkable turn of events, India finally triumphed in Chennai in February 1952, defeating England by an innings and eight runs.

During this landmark match, Gopinath made a notable contribution by scoring 35 runs while batting at number eight. India’s total of 457-9 followed England’s first innings score of 266. In a remarkable bowling performance, Ghulam Ahmed and Vinoo Mankad claimed four wickets each, dismissing England for just 183 in their second innings.

Earlier in the same series, Gopinath made a strong impression on his Test debut with an unbeaten 50—a feat that stands as the only half-century in his eight-match Test career. The TNCA commemorated Gopinath, stating, “A true pioneer of Indian cricket … your legacy will forever be etched in the game’s rich history.”

His passing marks the end of an era for Indian cricket, reminding fans and players alike of the roots and resilience of the sport in the country. Gopinath’s contributions, alongside those of his teammates, laid the foundation for the evolution of cricket in India that has grown to international acclaim today.
