Quinton de Kock of South Africa delivered an impressive performance with his third century in the IPL, but it was not enough to secure a win for the Mumbai Indians. The Punjab Kings emerged victorious, clinching a commanding seven-wicket triumph that placed them at the top of the IPL standings.
De Kock’s return to the Mumbai lineup since 2021 marked a significant milestone as he became the first overseas player to hit centuries for three different franchises. His innings contributed to Mumbai’s total of 195-6 at the Wankhede Stadium, a score that looked promising until Punjab’s bowlers made a spirited comeback.
In a brilliant partnership with Naman Dhir, De Kock built a substantial third-wicket stand of 122 runs. Dhir capitalized on an early let-off, going on to score a valuable 50 runs. De Kock’s innings was a display of aggressive batting; he remained unbeaten on 112 runs off just 60 deliveries, which included eight fours and seven sixes.
As Mumbai sought to push past 200 runs, Punjab’s bowlers, particularly Arshdeep Singh with three wickets, managed to halt their progress. A remarkable catch by Shreyas Iyer and Xavier Bartlett dismissed Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya, further shifting the momentum in Punjab’s favor.
In reply, Punjab Kings began their chase aggressively, scoring 21 runs off Deepak Chahar’s first over. Although quick wickets tumbled with Arya and Cooper Connolly falling to Afghanistan’s Allah Ghazanfar, Prabhsimran Singh stabilized the innings. After being dropped early in his innings, Prabhsimran’s counter-attacking approach saw him score a blistering unbeaten 80 off 39 balls, featuring 11 boundaries and two sixes.
Shreyas Iyer maintained his consistency in the tournament with yet another fifty, showcasing a solid batting performance alongside Prabhsimran. For Mumbai, the loss marked their fourth consecutive defeat, raising concerns about their form. Jasprit Bumrah continued to struggle, going wicketless for the fifth match in a row while conceding 41 runs in four overs.
Despite Mumbai’s faltering performance, Punjab Kings capitalized on their attack, with Prabhsimran and Shreyas accumulating a remarkable 139 runs in just 67 balls. Shreyas eventually fell to a well-timed catch by Dhir. Marcus Stoinis contributed with a quick finish, and Punjab secured a comfortable victory, remaining the only unbeaten team in the IPL.
