Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain Ajinkya Rahane expressed his frustration towards Cricket Australia following the team’s opening match defeat in the IPL season, where marquee player Cameron Green was unable to bowl due to injury. Green, who was signed for a record 252 million rupees, performed modestly with the bat but could not contribute in the bowling department.
In their clash against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, Kolkata set a target of 220 runs, with Green managing to score 18 runs from 10 balls. However, the lack of bowling options proved detrimental, as the Mumbai team successfully chased down the target with five balls remaining.
When asked about Green’s absence as a bowling option, Rahane’s response was pointed: “The question you need to ask Cricket Australia.” This remark highlights the tension surrounding Green’s fitness and availability.
Cricket Australia indicated that Green is dealing with a lower back injury, which prevents him from bowling for a short period. A spokesperson stated that the player is currently focused on gradually increasing his bowling loads in India, with an anticipated return in 10 to 12 days. They also confirmed that Kolkata Knight Riders have been kept informed about Green’s condition.
Since undergoing back surgery in 2024, the 26-year-old Green’s playing time has been limited. He bowled only seven deliveries during the T20 World Cup earlier this year and has largely participated in matches strictly as a batsman.
Rahane acknowledged the challenges posed by injuries to the bowling lineup but remained optimistic. He mentioned that the current situation provides an opportunity for other players to step up and showcase their talents, emphasizing the need for resilience within the team.
