Rai’s Victory Over Fleetwood Paves the Way for DP World Tour Championship

Aaron Rai achieved a significant milestone by claiming his second Rolex Series title at the 2025 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. He secured the victory against Tommy Fleetwood in a thrilling play-off that unfolded on Sunday.

Starting the day with a narrow lead, Rai quickly found himself trailing Fleetwood, who started strong. However, Rai turned the tide with an impressive streak of four consecutive birdies on the front nine, bringing him back to the top of the leaderboard. The final round, however, proved to be a roller-coaster ride as Fleetwood then regained the lead.

The excitement peaked when Rai made crucial birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, setting up a dramatic finish. Although he missed a potential winning putt on the 18th, he ultimately succeeded in the play-off, marking him as a three-time winner on the DP World Tour.

Throughout the tournament, Rai demonstrated remarkable skill, making a total of seven birdies while concluding with a round of 67, placing him at 25 under par. Fleetwood, on the other hand, delivered a bogey-free round with an impressive score of 66, which included an eagle and four birdies.

Rory McIlroy, the leader of the Race to Dubai, recorded a remarkable ten-under-par 62 and finished just one shot behind the leaders, tying for third with Nicolai Højgaard. Daniel Hillier and Richard Mansell followed two shots behind at 22 under.

Entering the tournament in 55th place in the season standings, Rai’s victory now propels him to the DP World Tour Championship as the latest titleholder. Rai, visibly emotional after embracing his father Amrik, reflected on his win, stating the experience was difficult to articulate but incredibly rewarding.

He praised Fleetwood not only for his prowess on the course but also for his character, highlighting the enjoyable experience of competing alongside such a talented sportsman over the final rounds.

After facing a setback with a missed short par putt on the 14th hole, Rai credited his caddie, Jason Timmis, for keeping him focused and present. This support proved vital as Rai made a successful up-and-down on the 15th, regaining his confidence and momentum heading into the final holes.

His strong finish showcased his resilience and determination, culminating in a well-deserved victory at the championship.
