Rohit Sharma Shines Bright in IPL, Following Kohli’s Legacy

A day after Virat Kohli showcased his enduring talent, Rohit Sharma, the opener for Mumbai Indians, made a significant impact with a half-century against Kolkata Knight Riders. This performance highlights that Rohit’s drive for runs remains strong, even as he approaches his 39th birthday next month.

Rohit has a storied history with the Mumbai franchise, leading the team to five Indian Premier League titles before Hardik Pandya took over the captaincy for the 2024 season. In line with Kohli, who is also managing his international duties at 37, Rohit is focusing on the 50-overs format while looking to prove his mettle in the competitive Twenty20 arena.

After Rohit scored an impressive 78 runs off 38 balls in Mumbai’s opening match of the season, coach Mahela Jayawardene noted a change in Rohit’s approach. “He’s freed himself up,” Jayawardene stated, emphasizing that without the pressures of captaincy, Rohit is able to play with a calm disposition. The former Sri Lanka captain reflected on his own experiences in franchise cricket, highlighting how reduced pressure can enhance performance.

Jayawardene pointed out that Rohit appears to be playing with a renewed sense of freedom, a mindset he has encouraged. The coach observed that less formal practice but strong muscle memory can lead to greater instinctual play, a trend evident in Rohit’s recent form.

Returning to IPL action after a break since January’s home series against New Zealand, Rohit has come back leaner and fitter. This preparation included joining the Mumbai camp early and engaging in multiple practice matches, which appears to have paid off as he achieved his 50th score of over 50 runs in the IPL.

Jayawardene noted the extensive simulations tailored for Rohit prior to the season, expressing satisfaction with the way he has been connecting with the ball. On the same weekend, Kohli also demonstrated his prowess by scoring an unbeaten half-century, leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a decisive victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad. Both players continue to prove that age is merely a number in the cricket world.
