The landscape of online streaming platforms has shifted considerably, with subscription prices on the rise across many popular services. As consumers increasingly migrate from traditional television to OTT platforms, they’ve been met with higher fees that reflect the ongoing trends in the industry.
Subscription fees have seen pronounced increases in the United States, as highlighted in a November 2025 report from The Wall Street Journal, which referred to this phenomenon as a “wave of streamflation.” HBO Max is now charging $10.99 for its basic plan, while the premium version reaches $22.99. Netflix’s plans also vary widely, with its basic ad-supported option at $7.99 and the premium plan costing $24.99. Other platforms such as Disney+, Hulu, and Peacock have subscription prices ranging from $12.99 to $18.99.
Looking back at 2020 for perspective, Netflix’s premium subscription was priced at $15.99, and HBO Max was available for $14.99. Disney+ was significantly cheaper at $6.99. Since then, the overall spike in prices reflects an increase of over 170%. Many other services were also available at lower rates during that period, creating a stark contrast to today’s subscription costs.
A shift in user preferences has also emerged, with a growing number of subscribers opting for ad-supported options as prices rise. According to Deloitte’s 2026 digital media trends report, about two-thirds of streaming subscribers now prefer ads to avoid paying higher subscription costs.
In India, the story of streaming services mirrors this trend, especially after the pandemic propelled the adoption of digital platforms. While prices have increased since the end of 2020, they remain comparatively lower than in the US when viewed on a yearly basis. For instance, Netflix’s annual premium price dropped from ₹9588 in 2020 to ₹7788 currently. Additionally, its mobile plan decreased from ₹2388 to ₹1788, a move likely aimed at competing effectively with JioHotstar.
Disney+ Hotstar’s pricing structure has also evolved; its premium subscription was ₹1499 per year in 2020 and now stands at ₹2199 with JioHotstar. The basic Super/VIP plan experienced a dramatic rise, going from ₹399 to ₹1099—a staggering increase of over 175%. The mobile-only plan continues to be available at ₹499 annually.
Amazon Prime’s standard subscription has moved from ₹999 in 2020 to ₹1499 today, with an additional ₹699 for an ad-free experience. Similarly, other platforms like Sony LIV and Zee5 have witnessed price hikes, now costing ₹1499 per year from their previous ₹999.
As subscription prices continue to climb, both in the US and India, consumers face the challenge of balancing content access with affordability in the evolving streaming landscape.
