India showcased an impressive performance in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, achieving a record total of 255/5 against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This score not only marks the highest T20 total ever recorded in Ahmedabad but also sets the benchmark for T20 World Cup finals. It stands as the third-highest team total in the tournament’s history.
Initially, India seemed poised to surpass the 300-run mark thanks to a rapid start from their top batters. However, a dramatic intervention from all-rounder Jimmy Neesham during the 16th over momentarily stifled their momentum as he took three wickets in the over. This critical period slowed India’s progress just as they appeared set for a monumental innings.
As the match progressed, India regained their rhythm in the later stages, driven by a strong finish from Shivam Dube. His efforts ensured that the defending champions posted a formidable target of 256 runs, presenting New Zealand with a significant challenge ahead.
The foundation of India’s innings was laid by captain Sanju Samson, who delivered a stellar performance with an explosive 89 runs off just 46 balls. This inning continues Samson’s impressive trajectory in the tournament, marking his third consecutive score exceeding 80 runs. With 24 sixes hit throughout the tournament, Samson holds the record for the most sixes by any player in a single T20 World Cup, outpacing New Zealand’s Finn Allen, who has managed 20 sixes to date.
Further complementing the batting display, Abhishek Sharma launched the innings with a blistering 52 runs off 21 balls, achieving the fastest half-century in the current World Cup and making history as the quickest in a World Cup knockout match. Ishan Kishan also contributed significantly to the total, scoring 54 runs off 25 balls. This achievement marks the first time in a World Cup knockout match that all three top-order batters have reached half-centuries.
In addition to individual feats, the innings etched another record as India became the first team to hit 100 sixes in any ICC limited-overs tournament, raising their tally to a remarkable 106 sixes. The previous record was held by the South Africa national team, which had managed 99 sixes during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
As New Zealand prepares for their chase, they face the daunting challenge of producing the highest successful run chase in a T20 World Cup final if they are to prevent India from defending their title successfully.
