Sarfaraz Appointed as Pakistan’s Test Coach for Upcoming Bangladesh Series

The recent attempt to amend the Women’s Reservation Bill in India’s Lok Sabha ended in defeat, highlighting the ongoing political tensions surrounding the issue. The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill was supported by 298 members but fell short of the two-thirds majority required, as 230 members opposed it. This has sparked varied reactions from political figures, including prominent actors.

Pawan Kalyan, the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, took to social media to express his disappointment over the bill’s failure. He characterized the opposition’s actions as a deliberate obstruction of a historic opportunity to improve women’s representation in Indian legislatures. He argued that the opposition is prioritizing political interests over essential reforms that aim to strengthen democracy and empower women.

In his statement, Kalyan emphasized the importance of the Women’s Reservation Bill as a milestone for women’s empowerment and democratic values. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to present the bill to Parliament and expressed optimism that women would eventually secure their rightful place in legislative bodies across India. Kalyan conveyed that passing the bill would have been a moment of pride and progress for millions of women.

Prakash Raj, another notable actor and public figure, responded critically to Kalyan’s remarks. In a post shared on social media, he accused Kalyan of misleading the public to appease the government’s narrative. Raj pointed out that the Women’s Reservation Bill was approved in 2023 and could still be enacted, contrasting this with Kalyan’s claims.

Raj further asserted that the focus should not have been on the delimitation bill, which he claimed would undermine the representation of Southern states like Andhra Pradesh. He challenged Kalyan to engage in a debate on the matter, suggesting that the rights and dignity of the people of Andhra Pradesh should not be compromised.

In light of the bill’s failure, two other important legislative proposals regarding delimitation and increasing Lok Sabha seats were also not put to vote. The 2023 Women’s Reservation Act remains in effect, having been officially notified by the government. However, its implementation is contingent on passing a delimitation bill, as the act ties the reservation quota to this process.

Following the defeat of the amendment, members of the ruling alliance expressed their discontent through protests, asserting that the opposition’s actions were anti-women. Conversely, opposition leaders defended their stance, stating their support for women’s reservation but opposition to the delimitation question. They critiqued the government’s intentions and timing regarding the amendment, with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, declaring that the amendment represented more than just women’s reservation; he viewed it as an attempt to alter India’s political landscape.
