Shashi Tharoor Criticizes Pakistan’s Decision to Boycott India Match

India’s opposition leader Shashi Tharoor has voiced strong criticism regarding the politicisation of cricket, particularly in light of Pakistan’s decision to boycott the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 match against India. He described the situation as “disgraceful” and called for all parties involved to urgently communicate and seek a resolution.

Tharoor expressed his concerns over the intersection of politics and sport, highlighting the unfortunate denial of a contract to Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He described Bangladesh’s reaction as an overreaction and warned that the controversy surrounding the T20 World Cup was escalating beyond control.

“It is pretty disgraceful that sport has been politicised in this way on both sides,” Tharoor stated. He emphasized that cricket should serve as a unifying force and suggested that the International Cricket Council (ICC) could facilitate discussions to address the ongoing tensions. He urged stakeholders to view this as a wake-up call to restore communication.

The implications of Pakistan’s potential boycott are significant, as the team would forfeit two points if they decide not to play against India. Clarity remains lacking regarding the outcome of possible knockout matches between the two rivals. Relationships between the two nations have been strained, with bilateral cricket still suspended following military conflicts.

The ICC has previously intervened to allow matches between the two countries to take place at neutral venues during global tournaments. Pakistan’s announcement of its squad for the T20 World Cup, which starts on February 7, is contingent upon government approval, further complicating their participation.

A boycott of the India match would substantially impact the tournament, given that clashes between India and Pakistan are highly anticipated events in cricket. The ICC is currently awaiting formal communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to understand its position regarding selective participation in the World Cup.

In a recent statement, the ICC emphasized its commitment to fostering a successful tournament and appealed to the PCB to explore feasible solutions that consider the interests of all stakeholders involved. The body expressed concern over how geopolitical issues might affect cricket as a whole, especially for fans in Pakistan.

This is not the first instance of political tensions interfering with cricketing events. Bangladesh’s recent decision to withdraw from a tournament in India due to safety concerns serves as a reminder of the fragile state of sports diplomacy in the region. Last year’s Asia Cup also exemplified the strained relationship, with India defeating Pakistan multiple times while refusing to publicly acknowledge their opponents.

In this context, the upcoming T20 World Cup presents both challenges and opportunities for reconciliation. Group A features notable teams, including Namibia, the United States, and the Netherlands, with only two moving on to the Super Eight stage. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed his support for the Pakistan team, hoping they would return victorious.

The ICC has reiterated that it does not foresee any threats to players or fans in India and has dismissed last-minute requests for schedule changes. As the situation evolves, the focus remains on ensuring a successful T20 World Cup that transcends political divides.
