South Africa showcased an impressive performance in their opening match of the T20 World Cup, defeating Canada by 57 runs in Ahmedabad. This match not only highlighted South Africa’s batting prowess but also demonstrated their bowling strength.
After Canada won the toss and opted to field, South Africa ramped up their scoring in the final overs, amassing a total of 213-4. This score marks the highest total achieved in the current tournament. The late fireworks came from David Miller, who contributed 39 runs off 23 balls, and Tristan Stubbs, who remained not out at 34 from 19 balls. Together, they formed an unbroken partnership of 75 runs in just over six overs.
In Canada’s innings, Navneet Dhaliwal stood out as the sole top-order batsman to make a significant impact, scoring 64 runs before being dismissed in the last over. Canada ended with a score of 156-8, unable to match South Africa’s run total.
Lungi Ngidi was particularly effective for South Africa, achieving figures of 4-31 from his four overs. His performance played a crucial role in dismantling Canada’s batting lineup, as they slumped to 45-4 during the powerplay phase. Ngidi was later awarded the player of the match title and noted the impact of the evening dew on his bowling strategy, saying, “It did have a bit of an impact…the slow balls were still holding up a little bit.”
Opening the batting for South Africa, Quinton de Kock and captain Aiden Markram set a strong foundation with a partnership of 70 runs in 6.5 overs. De Kock scored 25 runs before being bowled by a clever delivery from Dilpreet Bajwa. Markram continued to accelerate the innings, reaching his half-century with just 28 balls faced and ultimately scoring 59 runs, which included 10 fours and a six before his dismissal.
Ansh Patel, the left-arm wrist-spinner for Canada, had a noteworthy performance as well, taking 3-31 in his four overs. He played a pivotal role in briefly halting South Africa’s momentum by dismissing key batsmen, including Ryan Rickelton, who contributed 33 runs, and Dewald Brevis for just six runs. However, the late efforts from Miller and Stubbs solidified South Africa’s commanding position in the match.
