Sri Lanka’s Shanaka Addresses Mental Health Struggles Amid Criticism

Sri Lanka’s cricket team faced harsh criticism during their disappointing campaign at the Twenty20 World Cup, where they were eliminated from the tournament in the group stages. Captain Dasun Shanaka expressed concern about how this scrutiny has affected the players’ mental health, highlighting the need for a supportive environment.

The squad’s performance leading up to the World Cup drew significant attention, particularly after a string of losses, including five defeats in six matches against England. This troubled preparation culminated in another heavy loss, this time to New Zealand, further compounding the team’s woes.

In the wake of their defeat, Shanaka issued an apology to fans, calling their performance “embarrassing.” However, he emphasized the need for reducing the external negativity that players face. He suggested that the cricketing authorities should consider stepping in for the sake of future players’ mental well-being.

The Sri Lankan team struggled in their last match, chasing a target of 169 runs. The situation deteriorated as they found themselves at 46-5 within the first eleven overs, unable to mount a successful recovery. Shanaka acknowledged the frustration that comes from not being able to perform well despite the intentions to do so.

Injuries to key bowlers, including Wanindu Hasaranga, Matheesha Pathirana, and Ehsan Malinga, severely hampered the team’s efforts. Shanaka pointed out the importance of fitness and its direct correlation to player injuries. He noted that fitness should be prioritized as it plays a critical role in maintaining a competitive squad.

The urgency for change was echoed by former captain Kumar Sangakkara, who warned that Sri Lanka risks becoming irrelevant in the modern cricket landscape. He called for significant reforms at all levels, stressing the need to adapt to the rapid evolution of cricket globally. Sangakkara cautioned against repeating past methods and expecting different results, reinforcing the call for a strategic overhaul.
