Sunny Deol’s anticipated film, Border 2, is set to premiere on January 23, 2026. This sequel boasts a diverse cast, including Sunny Deol himself, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, and Sonam Bajwa, among others. Notably, Tabu, who played the role of Deol’s wife in the original film, is absent from this installment.
The decision to exclude Tabu stems from a shift in narrative focus, according to producer Nidhi Dutta. In an interview, she explained that the storyline of Border 2 explores a different battle than the 1971 war depicted in the first film. Consequently, only select actors from the original have returned.
Nidhi outlined that Sunny Deol portrays a different character in Border 2, which influenced the casting choice. She stated, “Sunny Deol is not playing Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri in the film. You must have understood in all the assets from the film that Major Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri, who he played in the first film, is a different character. So obviously, the wife will also be different.”
Additionally, reports suggest that Sunny Deol is the highest-paid actor in Border 2. As this remake of the 1997 hit aims to evoke patriotic feelings, it is strategically releasing just before Republic Day. While exact figures have not been officially confirmed, various sources indicate that Deol commanded a salary of around Rs. 50 crores for his role.
In the original Border, which was released in 1997, Deol was also the top earner, receiving Rs. 1.2 crores for playing Major Kuldeep Singh. Other cast members, such as Varun Dhawan and Diljit Dosanjh, are also reported to have secured substantial payments, with Dhawan earning between Rs. 8 to 10 crores and Dosanjh approximately Rs. 4 to 5 crores.
At a recent promotional event for Border 2, Sunny Deol became emotional while discussing his late father, Dharmendra, who served as his inspiration for the film. He mentioned that the 1964 film Haqeeqat, which starred Dharmendra, significantly influenced his decision to take on this role, leading to a heartfelt moment where he expressed, “main zyada kuch nahi bol paunga.”
With the release date drawing near, Border 2 is generating excitement among fans eager to see how this sequel builds upon its predecessor. The cast’s performances and the film’s themes are anticipated to resonate with audiences, reaffirming the legacy of the original.
