Tiger Woods Takes Break for Treatment Following DUI Incident

Tiger Woods announced on Tuesday that he is stepping away from golf to focus on his health while facing DUI charges following a rollover accident in Florida last week. The 15-time major champion, regarded as one of the greatest golfers, was arrested after his vehicle rolled over near his home in Jupiter Island. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from the incident, and Woods was released on bail the same evening.

In a social media statement, Woods expressed his understanding of the gravity of the situation. He emphasized that taking time off to seek treatment is essential for prioritizing his well-being and aiming for a lasting recovery. The 50-year-old golfer made it clear he is committed to returning in a healthier state, both personally and professionally, and has asked for privacy during this time.

Following Woods’ announcement, Augusta National Golf Club confirmed that he would not attend the Masters, the year’s first major. Documents filed in court show that Woods has pleaded not guilty to the DUI charges and has requested a jury trial, with his next court appearance scheduled for May 5. Notably, he is not required to attend any proceedings before the trial.

According to a probable-cause affidavit, Woods indicated to authorities that he had been distracted by his phone and did not notice a slowdown in traffic before the collision occurred. The affidavit also stated that Woods possessed two hydrocodone pills at the time of his arrest and exhibited signs of impairment, including lethargy and dilated pupils.

During the investigation, Woods reportedly mentioned to officers that he had recently undergone multiple surgeries, including seven on his back and over 20 on his leg. Although his behavior seemed erratic, with some signs of alertness, the deputy involved expressed a belief that Woods was impaired and unable to operate a vehicle safely.

Woods had recently returned to competitive golf following an extended absence, participating in the TGL Finals, an indoor league that requires less walking than traditional golf. He had hoped to prepare for the Masters scheduled for April 9-12. However, the club formalized that he would not be present at any events next week, including the anticipated Champions Dinner.

Augusta National Golf Club’s Chairman Fred Ridley issued a supportive statement, expressing the club’s backing for Woods as he works on his health. Although Woods won’t be physically present during the Masters, Ridley affirmed that his influence would still resonate at the event.
