The UAE is gearing up for its third Twenty20 World Cup, aiming for a significant victory in a challenging group. This year, the team seeks to build on its previous World Cup experiences, where they secured only one win over two tournaments.
After missing out on the last edition, fast bowler Junaid Siddique believes their absence has intensified their determination to succeed. He expressed that in recent years, the team’s mindset has evolved significantly. “Two to three years back, we could just imagine pulling off an upset. Now, we believe we can beat any team,” Siddique stated during a video call with Reuters.
The fast bowler emphasized the unpredictability of T20 cricket, where a single impressive performance can turn the game. “One good innings, one good spell, and we can beat any team. That’s how a T20 game is,” he remarked. This positive outlook is bolstered by the introduction of the domestic International League T20, launched in 2023, which has provided local players with valuable experience alongside international stars.
Siddique highlighted the benefits of participating in the ILT20, which has helped players gain confidence and improve their skills. “Most of the players are now playing ILT20 and getting good opportunities and learning from the big players. So, we have a lot of confidence and belief that we can have a good impact in this World Cup,” he noted, reflecting on his time with Sharjah Warriors.
Despite the tough competition posed by South Africa, New Zealand, and Afghanistan in their group, Siddique believes the experience gained from facing these teams previously will be advantageous. Born in Pakistan, he has faced both New Zealand and Afghanistan, which he feels gives him an edge going into this tournament.
Since gaining associate membership with the International Cricket Council in 1990, the UAE has sought more opportunities to play against full member nations. Last year, they faced only nine of the world’s top teams in a total of 23 T20 matches. “If we play against the big teams, we can get more experience and exposure. We can compete well and beat them,” Siddique added.
The UAE is set to kick off their World Cup journey against New Zealand at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. As they aim for success in this prestigious tournament, the team looks to build on their past experiences and prove their capabilities on a global stage.
