Universal Pictures’ decision to split its adaptation of “Wicked” into two films has sparked debate among critics, with some viewing it as a strategic money-making move. However, the release of “Wicked: For Good” offers an opportunity to delve deeper into the beloved “Wizard of Oz” prequel beyond its Broadway origins.
The new film expands on iconic scenes, including Dorothy’s arrival in Oz. This additional length also introduces two original songs, including “The Girl in the Bubble,” where Ariana Grande’s character Glinda confronts aspects of her shadowy past. Grande emphasizes that the film explores the darker elements of her character, moving past the surface charm seen in the Broadway show.
Set several years after the first film, “Wicked: For Good” features Elphaba, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, living in exile and labeled a wicked witch, while Glinda enjoys her role as a leading figure in the Wizard’s regime. Despite her success, Glinda struggles with loneliness and guilt, having achieved her dreams but feeling isolated.
Ariana Grande is anticipated to be a strong contender for the Best Supporting Actress at the upcoming Oscars, with Universal likely investing heavily in her campaign. Meanwhile, Erivo is also being predicted as a strong Best Actress hopeful, having contributed a new song titled “There’s No Place Like Home.”
The two-film format has allowed for a comprehensive exploration of the narrative overlap between “Wicked” and the classic “The Wizard of Oz.” “Wicked: For Good” unfolds alongside the events of the 1939 film, capturing key moments such as Dorothy’s perilous journey from Kansas to Oz. In contrast to the Broadway version, the movie provides multiple glimpses of Dorothy, though her face remains obscured to highlight her role as an unwitting player in Oz’s political turmoil.
Producer Marc Platt notes that the expanded narrative gives audiences enjoyable insights into how the two stories intersect. As fans of the original continue to support the franchise—having grossed over $750 million worldwide—Universal bets that many will be eager to embark on this cinematic adventure once again.
