Australia faced a setback in their pursuit of the Super Eight stage in the T20 World Cup, suffering a 23-run defeat against Zimbabwe in Colombo. This loss came as a surprise, with the former champions unable to find their rhythm in a crucial group match.
Zimbabwe set a competitive target of 170, driven by opener Brian Bennett’s impressive knock of 64 not out. Australia’s innings got off to a rocky start, with the team losing four wickets within the first five overs. Glenn Maxwell contributed a brief 31 runs, but the Australian batting order struggled to find stability at 106-5. Despite Matt Renshaw’s solid effort of 65, the Zimbabwean bowlers, particularly Blessing Muzarabani who took 4 wickets for just 17 runs, managed to restrict Australia to 146 runs, bowled out in 19.3 overs.
In their first T20 World Cup encounter against Australia in nearly two decades, Zimbabwe showcased determination, building on their previous success against the same opponent. During the powerplay, Zimbabwe reached 47 without losing any wickets, successfully navigating the early overs after being put in to bat.
Travis Head, standing in as Australia’s captain, introduced bowlers Adam Zampa, Matthew Kuhnemann, and Maxwell in an attempt to regain control over the match. However, Zimbabwe continued to accumulate runs, even after Marcus Stoinis dismissed Tadiwanashe Marumani for 35 runs.
As the innings progressed, Bennett’s contribution became pivotal. He exceeded the 100-run mark in partnership with Ryan Burl, who provided critical support with his innings of 35. Australia’s worries escalated when Stoinis had to leave the field after sustaining a hand injury while fielding. Despite the setback, Cameron Green quickly took Burl’s wicket, ending the 16th over on a high note for Australia.
In the final moments of the innings, Zampa and Nathan Ellis tightened the bowling, but Zimbabwe’s captain Sikandar Raza scored an unbeaten 25, culminating the innings with a six on the last ball to set the score at 169-2. This commanding performance has put Zimbabwe in a strong position as they aim to advance further in the tournament.
