Sunny Varkey is a billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist, widely recognized as the founder and executive chairman of GEMS Education—the world’s largest private K-12 education provider. He also serves as chairman of the Varkey Group and acts as a trustee for the Varkey Foundation, his charitable organization focused on global education initiatives.

Biography

  • 1957 — Born in Kerala, India, to Syrian Christian parents who were both teachers.

  • 2000 — Launched Global Education Management Systems (GEMS) to expand school operations under a unified brand.
  • 2003 — GEMS Education entered the international market, opening schools in the UK and other countries.
  • 2012 — Sold Emirates Healthcare (Welcare’s parent company) to Mediclinic International, a major healthcare provider.

Today, GEMS operates more than 60 schools in the Middle East and over 250 institutions globally.
