A Wave of Collective Fear Sweeps Across Europe Over Mysterious Drones

The recent surge in sightings of unidentified drones across Europe has triggered a widespread wave of anxiety, which some media reports have termed a “mass panic.” Despite the lack of any concrete physical damage thus far, this phenomenon has intensified Europeans’ feelings of insecurity, creating a perception that warfare is encroaching upon their doorsteps.

An extensive report published by a British newspaper examined the issue from psychological and social perspectives, noting that it remains unconfirmed whether these drones are operated under directives from the Kremlin. However, public sentiment in Europe leans toward blaming Russia for these incidents.

The authors, Daniel Boffey (the Guardian’s chief correspondent) and Miranda Bryant (the newspaper’s correspondent in the Nordic countries), highlighted that the uncertainty surrounding the responsible parties fosters a general atmosphere of fear and mistrust across the continent.

Among the stories highlighted in the report was that of a Norwegian firefighter named Viggard Rappan, who recounted noticing a peculiar red light near his garage one night. It was only after he followed news reports about the mysterious drones that he realized its potential origin.

In an analytical perspective, Professor Pirelle Bong, head of the drones and culture project at the University of Cambridge, stated that the intent behind these intrusions is not necessarily hostile, but aims to provoke anxiety and instill a sense of vulnerability. She added, “The incursions serve as a means to frighten and provoke Europeans, making them feel unprotected without escalating to a full-blown war as seen in Ukraine.”

The report suggests that these incidents have transplanted wartime anxieties into the everyday lives of Europeans accustomed to feeling safe, leaving them questioning whether they are adequately prepared for a confrontation with Russia.

Richard Carter, a collaborator on the same project, remarked that the utilization of drones in conflicts has “transformed the peaceful skies into a perpetual threat,” signifying that this new reality alters how people perceive their daily lives and instills a continuous sense of danger.

Meanwhile, Robert Bartholomew from Oakland University connected the current phenomenon to a long history of mass hysteria in Northern Europe, explaining that the region has seen reports dating back to the 1930s about “unidentified objects” believed to be Soviet aircraft, followed in the 1940s by tales of “phantom rockets,” and in the 1970s and 1980s, claims of “mysterious submarines” that were later discovered to be mostly misidentified natural occurrences or inaccurate reports.

Bartholomew noted that what is transpiring today fits within a “perfect storm of chaos,” fueled by rising geopolitical tensions and exacerbated by Russian aggression, alongside European concerns over the fluctuating positions of the United States during Donald Trump’s presidency.

According to the report, last year saw a significant increase in sightings of unidentified drones over Northern and Western Europe, while three drones were downed within Polish airspace last month. Other sightings have led to the closure of major airports like those in Copenhagen and Munich, resulting in 17 flight cancellations and impacting around 3,000 passengers.

Reni Bago, CEO of Inevit Power, disclosed that major power plants in Eastern Estonia detected 22 unauthorized drone flights since late last year, noting that while these incidents did not cause operational harm, they sparked considerable concern among European communities.

Analysts believe that Russia is leveraging these disturbances to test NATO’s vigilance, with Eiger Pelichev, the director-general of the Estonian border forces, labeling these activities as “repeated provocations designed to gauge our capabilities and responses.”
