The United Arab Emirates has strengthened its agricultural ties through a new sustainable farming pathway that incorporates technology and long-term planning. Despite the challenges posed by a desert environment and limited water resources, the nation has successfully developed an intelligent agricultural system that boosts local production, gradually achieves self-sufficiency, and contributes to food security stability. This transformation is the result of a strategic vision that the UAE has embraced for over a decade, focusing on enhancing agricultural infrastructure, fostering research and innovation, developing value chains, and balancing production with resource conservation.
Farming in the UAE has evolved from being a seasonal, marginal activity to a crucial element in sustainable development policies, serving as a fundamental pillar of the national food security strategy. This transition has led to significant advancements in organization and production. The agricultural area has expanded, irrigation systems have been modernized, and new production methods have been implemented that suit the desert climate. According to the latest official statistics, the country boasts over 33,000 active farms, which include traditional farming, organic agriculture, and hydroponics, reflecting the evolution of the national agricultural model and its adaptation to environmental changes.
Local farms now produce over 328,000 tons of vegetables, around 435,000 tons of field crops and fodder, and approximately 369,000 tons of fruits annually. This increase in production has managed to meet more than 20% of the total local demand for vegetables, while self-sufficiency rates for some crops, like cucumbers, reach approximately 80%. The variety of crops includes tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplants, zucchini, guavas, citrus fruits, bananas, almonds, figs, and sidr, alongside an expansion in date palm cultivation, which serves as a vital agricultural, cultural, and economic resource.
One of the key sustainable agriculture tools adopted by the UAE to make a significant move towards self-sufficiency is the implementation of greenhouse farming. This method allows for year-round crop production with high efficiency. In Abu Dhabi alone, the number of greenhouses has surpassed 19,000, which collectively produced over 99,000 tons of vegetables in a single year, accounting for more than 70% of the emirate’s total production. The areas cultivated in these greenhouses cover thousands of acres, with a market value exceeding 254 million dirhams.
To reduce reliance on soil and freshwater, the UAE has also expanded its use of hydroponic technologies, known for their efficient water use and high productivity. There are currently over 87 hydroponic farms across the country, utilizing production systems that outperform traditional farming methods by utilizing less space and precise nutrients while saving between 70% and 90% of irrigation water. As a result, hydroponic farms exhibit significantly higher yield and quality compared to conventional methods, producing crops like cucumbers, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, strawberries, and peppers. This enhances the UAE’s capacity to meet local demand and provides flexible production alternatives in a water-scarce environment.
Significant Expansion
In its efforts to diversify agricultural production, the UAE has seen notable advancements in wheat cultivation as a strategic crop aimed at establishing a stable national grain reserve. Successful projects have been launched in several areas, with the “Emirates Wheat” initiative being one of the pioneering agricultural efforts started in 2017 by a small group of Emirati farmers, initially consisting of just 16 members. Over the years, it has grown to include around 200 farms producing more than 80 tons of wheat annually during the harvest season.
In March 2022, the Emirate of Sharjah launched a wheat farm project in the Mleiha region, which produces one of the highest quality wheat varieties globally due to its high protein content and the absence of harmful chemicals or fertilizers.
Additionally, the dairy farming sector is experiencing remarkable growth in terms of breeds and breeding methods, alongside veterinary oversight, resulting in a significant increase in local fresh milk production and a reduction in the supply-demand gap in the domestic market.
To support compliance with responsible agricultural practices, the UAE has launched a “National Sustainable Agriculture Mark,” serving as a certification framework for agricultural entities meeting advanced standards in environmental, social, and economic management.
The mark is a strategic tool to enhance consumer trust and boost the competitiveness of local products in national and regional markets. Accreditation lasts three years and is granted after a thorough evaluation of production systems, resource management, irrigation methods, soil quality, and operational efficiency. This certification also opens export opportunities for sustainable products, especially in light of the rising global demand for environmentally friendly agricultural goods.
Integrated System
The uniqueness of the UAE’s sustainable agriculture experience lies not only in the diversity of initiatives but also in the level of integration among various sectors and governmental bodies. The agricultural sector operates within a unified national system that combines federal policies, local initiatives, legislative efforts, technical and financial support, and the encouragement of innovation and scientific research.
This integration has fostered an environment conducive to agricultural investment, the adoption of modern technologies, and a smooth transition from traditional farming to advanced intelligent production systems that address environmental challenges and align with food security requirements. Collaborations with national universities, such as the United Arab Emirates University, have furthered national efforts to achieve food security, leading a team of researchers to develop and produce one million date palm trees from 65 varieties annually and propagate between 60,000 and 80,000 new plants each year, thanks to scientific farming techniques and modern tissue culture methods.
The shift to sustainable agriculture in the UAE is fundamentally anchored in leveraging technology, not only in production but throughout the food value chain. This includes sophisticated irrigation systems, remote sensing devices, drones for crop monitoring, and AI systems for analyzing soil and weather data.
The country aims to empower farmers to access these technologies through training programs, digital guidance platforms, and incentive initiatives for acquiring modern equipment, thereby facilitating a tangible shift towards data-driven production and continuous monitoring.
