A federal judge has prohibited the Trump administration from revoking work permits and other documents that provide legal status to approximately 5,000 Venezuelans out of a total of around 350,000 individuals. This follows a recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which allowed for the termination of the temporary protected status granted to these individuals.
U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco ruled yesterday evening that Homeland Security Secretary Kristin Nunez likely exceeded her authority when she canceled those documents in February, coinciding with a broader conclusion on the temporary protected status for Venezuelans.
On May 19, the Supreme Court voided a prior ruling by Chen that had blocked the administration from ending the deportation protections offered to Venezuelans under the temporary protected status program, aligning with Trump’s stringent immigration policies.
However, the Supreme Court specifically stated that it does not prevent any Venezuelan from challenging Nunez’s decision to revoke the documents issued under this program, which have allowed them to work and reside in the United States.
