The United States exercised its veto power today to block a resolution in the United Nations Security Council that called for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the removal of all restrictions imposed by Israel on the delivery of aid to the Palestinian territory.
The proposed resolution, drafted by ten elected members out of the council’s total of fifteen, also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups. It garnered support from fourteen members.
This marks the sixth occasion on which the United States has utilized its veto power in the Security Council concerning the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has persisted for nearly two years.
