A U.S. Appeals Court has permitted President Donald Trump to continue deploying National Guard troops in Los Angeles amid protests against stricter immigration enforcement, temporarily halting a lower court ruling that had blocked the deployment of these forces.
This decision by the Ninth Circuit does not necessarily indicate that the court will ultimately agree with Trump’s actions, but it does allow him to maintain control over the National Guard for the time being.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco determined that Trump’s order to deploy the National Guard was unlawful. Breyer subsequently instructed that the troops should revert to the authority of California Governor Gavin Newsom, who had filed a lawsuit aimed at restricting the National Guard’s operations within the state.
