A study published in the journal “Nature Medicine” by the University of Oxford sheds light on the role of the common virus Cytomegalovirus (CMV) in enhancing the effectiveness of skin cancer treatments while simultaneously reducing their side effects. Researchers highlighted how this cytomegalovirus, which is widespread and infects the majority of the population without clear symptoms, remains latent within the body for life.
The research team discovered significant effects of the virus on the immune response in melanoma patients undergoing immunotherapy. Melanoma, known as the most aggressive form of skin cancer, can often be challenging to treat in its advanced stages.
Despite advancements in immunotherapies that have improved survival rates for affected individuals, the effectiveness of these treatments can vary among patients and may lead to severe side effects, particularly with combination therapies.
Data indicated that patients infected with CMV showed a more favorable response to single-agent PD-1 immunotherapy, experiencing a lower likelihood of disease recurrence compared to those without the infection.
In contrast, no significant differences were observed with combination therapies, suggesting the virus may play a crucial role particularly in conjunction with milder treatments. Other varied results were also noted in the study.
These findings represent a preliminary step towards a deeper understanding of the connection between viral infections and cancer. The researchers hope that ongoing clinical follow-ups and future studies will facilitate the development of safer and more effective immunotherapies, and potentially leverage the virus itself or its immune responses as part of a novel treatment strategy.
