A recent study conducted by researchers from the universities of Cambridge and Shanghai has highlighted that teenagers who have early bedtimes and sufficient sleep exhibit superior cognitive and mental abilities when compared to those who go to bed late.
This study, the largest of its kind focusing on adolescent brain development, involved over 3,000 participants aged between 13 and 18 years. Researchers monitored their sleep patterns with specialized devices and subjected them to a series of cognitive tests and brain scans.
The findings revealed that the group accustomed to early sleep (about 37% of participants) demonstrated better academic and cognitive performance, excelling in reading, problem-solving, and memory tests. Brain scans indicated that members of this group not only had larger brain volumes but also more efficient neural functions.
Conversely, the study noted that the majority of teenagers fail to get the recommended amount of sleep, which is between 8 to 10 hours daily. The average sleep duration for the high-performing group was only about 7 hours and 25 minutes.
Professor Barbara Sahakian, one of the researchers involved, explained that during sleep, the brain engages in complex processes that help organize memories and reinforce acquired skills, thus elucidating the strong connection between sleep quality and cognitive abilities.
Researchers advised teenagers seeking to enhance their mental performance to adhere to several practices, including avoiding electronic devices before bedtime, engaging in regular physical activity, and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule even on weekends.
This study provides further evidence of the critical importance of adequate sleep during adolescence, a period marked by significant brain development.
