Dubai Introduces New AI Model to Warn Residents of Possible Floods and Waterlogging

Dubai is set to introduce an artificial intelligence system aimed at offering real-time information about waterlogging throughout the emirate. This AI technology will notify officials when heavy rain is anticipated and help identify regions vulnerable to flooding.

Mohamed Al Hashmi, a programmer and inspection officer at Dubai Civil Defence, mentioned that the data collected will assist civil defence teams in informing residents and steering clear of flood-prone areas in the city.

“By utilizing global data available to us, we were able to create a reasonably accurate predictive model. However, we could enhance its precision by incorporating more high-resolution data,” Al Hashmi stated.

Dubai Civil Defence is collaborating with Hydrofense, a Norwegian engineering firm, to deploy this system.

He explained that the agency is still in the process of collecting information from weather stations and satellite images. “Once we have the data ready, it can be integrated swiftly within a month or two, depending on the data acquisition timeline,” Al Hashmi added.

This joint initiative was highlighted during the Dubai AI Week 2025, which is taking place from April 21 to April 25, showcasing at one of the AI Startup Exhibits in Boulevard Emirates Towers. The event also featured numerous innovations alongside DCD’s offerings, including virtual reality experiences, a smart suit, and a haptic-controlled Teslasuit.
