A group of six university students from the UAE has successfully completed a project entitled “Microgrid”, designed to offer sustainable energy solutions while reducing carbon emissions.
This initiative aligns with the United Nations’ goals of halving emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The students—Hamad Ibrahim, Sara Al Raisi, Rafi’a Al Suwaidi, Rashid Al Hajari, Saif Faisal, and Ghaith Muhand—explained that their graduation project aims to promote the use of clean energy and lessen reliance on traditional energy sources, thereby lowering carbon emissions and enhancing energy security. They highlight the project’s role in improving consumption efficiency through innovative smart systems.
The significance of the microgrid lies in its practicality as a solution that strengthens electrical grid stability while equipping nations to tackle environmental challenges. It contributes to the development of smart cities capable of managing their resources sustainably and efficiently.
Among the key achievements of the project are the successful implementation of trial projects in various environments by integrating solar energy with advanced storage technologies, along with the creation of scalable operational models for both local and global applications.
The microgrid primarily relies on renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, combined with energy storage technologies and artificial intelligence for energy management within the grid. This system is noted for its ability to function either connected to the main grid or independently, making it adaptable to various environments, especially in remote areas or places that are challenging to supply through conventional networks.
The students affirmed that this project is in line with the UAE’s strategic energy objectives for 2050, aiming for a balanced energy mix with 50% relying on clean sources and a 70% reduction in emissions.
