Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani recently discussed the current relevance of his 2014 sci-fi satire PK, which tackled themes of superstition and the role of misguided prophets. In an interview with Variety India, he reflected on the challenges of creating impactful cinema in today’s climate.
Hirani acknowledged the difficulty of navigating public opinion in the current environment. He stated that there seems to be a constant stream of critical comments directed at creators. This shift in discourse makes artists wary of their work. However, he surmised that excessive concern over such reactions can lead to a detrimental mindset.
On the importance of authenticity, Hirani emphasized that filmmakers should approach their projects with honesty. He argued that striving for a “safe” narrative can be counterproductive and ultimately result in criticism regardless. By embracing their convictions, he believes filmmakers can foster a loyal audience among those who appreciate genuine storytelling.
PK featured a star-studded cast, including Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla, and Sanjay Dutt. The film received widespread acclaim for its bold exploration of societal issues.
Looking ahead, Hirani is set to collaborate again with Aamir Khan for a biopic about Dadasaheb Phalke, known as the father of Indian cinema. However, development on this project has faced delays, reportedly due to creative differences.
Hirani’s most recent directorial effort, Dunki (2023), showcases a comedy-drama narrative centered on illegal immigration through the donkey flight method. The film features prominent actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, and Boman Irani, with a special appearance by Vicky Kaushal.
Throughout his career, Hirani has delivered several successful films, including Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots, and Sanju, which have left a lasting impact on Indian cinema.
