War films often navigate the delicate balance between critical acclaim and box-office performance. Farhan Akhtar’s latest film, “120 Bahadur,” exemplifies this challenge. While the war drama has been praised for its storytelling, courage, and themes of sacrifice, it struggled to attract audiences during its theatrical run. The film is now poised to reach a wider audience with its upcoming release on OTT platforms.
Prime Video announced the film’s digital debut via an Instagram post featuring a montage of gripping scenes from the movie. The promotional caption hinted at the film’s powerful narrative: “64 years back, courage had 120 new names 💪 What happened next? #120BahadurOnPrime — watch now.” Although the film hit theaters in November 2024, it did not achieve significant box-office success.
At the heart of “120 Bahadur” lies the story of Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, who received the Param Vir Chakra posthumously for his valor in the Battle of Rezang La. Critics have generally lauded the film, particularly its performances and battle sequences. Despite the positive reviews, the film’s box office earnings totaled only ₹24 crore against a hefty production budget of ₹80 crore.
The film is directed by Razneesh Ghai and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the Excel Entertainment label, in partnership with Amit Chandrra of Trigger Happy Studios. It features Farhan Akhtar in the lead role, with a supporting cast that includes Raashii Khanna, Sparsh Walia, Vivan Bhatena, and Eijaz Khan. “120 Bahadur” pays homage to the bravery of the soldiers from the 13 Kumaon Regiment, who exhibited remarkable resilience despite daunting odds during the Battle of Rezang La in Ladakh.
In an interview with Masala magazine, Farhan Akhtar shared the profound emotional impact of the story on him. He expressed his admiration for Shaitan Singh and the soldiers who fought alongside him. “The story is the battle that he fought. It’s become the stuff of legends,” he remarked, emphasizing how their determination inspired him. He highlighted the deep sense of patriotism that arose while working on the film, noting it underscores what it truly means to be an Indian, igniting a powerful sense of national pride.
“120 Bahadur” reaches audiences at a pivotal moment, reminding viewers of the sacrifices made by individuals for their country and the timeless values of courage and dedication. As it transitions to OTT, it aims to engage new viewers and spark dialogue about the themes it embodies.
