Former South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo announced his candidacy for the presidency on Friday, just a month ahead of the elections, where voters will choose a successor to the ousted former president, Yoon Suk-yeol.
Han declared his intention to run in the National Assembly elections scheduled for June 3, the day after he stepped down from his role as acting president and Prime Minister, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.
Having served as Prime Minister under both liberal and conservative administrations and as South Korea’s ambassador to the United States, Han is considered the strongest candidate among the conservatives to challenge Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.
