A variety of cultural and theatrical events filled with informative content were part of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival, which took place two days ago.
Khawla Al Majini, the festival’s general coordinator, expressed gratitude for the support received from the festival’s partners, stating:
“The 16th edition of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival benefits from the support of a distinguished group of partners and sponsors who play a crucial role in the festival’s success, enhancing its reputation as a leading global platform dedicated to fostering a culture of reading among children, promoting cultural dialogue and exchange, and celebrating authors and illustrators who have enriched the Arab children’s library.
Thanks to their ongoing commitment and active participation, we aim to offer comprehensive programs that elevate visitor experiences, meet the aspirations of children and their parents, and contribute to building an informed generation.”
The festival featured a series of quality sessions and seminars, including a panel discussion titled “The Impact of Picture Books on Storytelling,” which hosted:
Dr. Abdullah Al Sharhan, a director, Emirati artist, educator, and creator of content aimed at children; Bara’a Al Awwar, a Palestinian illustrator and author who has written and participated in over forty children’s books; and Rahat Kadouji, a best-selling children’s book author and illustrator.
During the session, the artists emphasized that visuals are essential for capturing children’s attention and enhancing their understanding of text, noting that illustrations not only convey the story but also add an emotional layer that enriches the reading experience. They highlighted the importance of understanding children’s psychology and the influence of colors and nature in sparking their imagination and fostering a lasting connection with books.
Dr. Abdullah Al Sharhan discussed the significant influence of clear imagery and language on children’s minds, providing examples from his surroundings and drawing inspiration from the world of children to create impactful content, describing such words as ones that reach a child’s heart swiftly.
He noted the importance of interactive books in establishing a continuous relationship between children and literature, stressing that a child will either love a book at first glance or not connect with it at all.
Illustrator and author Bara’a Al Awwar emphasized drawing inspiration from folk tales in children’s illustrations. Additionally, Rahat Kadouji pointed out that varying artistic elements in illustrations enhance story comprehension and capture children’s interest.
Writers and experts in children’s literature shared insights on the need for new teaching and communication methods for the new generation, advocating for engagement and ongoing interaction instead of merely providing ready answers.
They highlighted the necessity of reevaluating educational communication approaches to align with children’s growing curiosity and ambitions. This was discussed during a symposium titled “Small Minds… Big Dreams,” featuring Emirati author and storyteller Iman Al Yousuf.
Also participating were academic researcher and child rights advocate Amal Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hnongari from Libya, and Chinese writer and illustrator Xin Li, whose book “I Lived in the Whale’s Belly” won the 2024 Barnes & Noble award for best illustrated book for children and youth.
Recommendations and Insights
Several publishers participating in the 16th edition of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival presented a diverse range of publications that address psychological and behavioral issues relevant to children and their families, offering educational recommendations and insights to help parents and educators raise a more balanced and aware generation. The displayed books varied in content and format.
