Gaza: Breaths Paused on the Brink

Two years of conflict in Gaza narrate the story of a resilient populace that refuses to succumb, enduring relentless assaults while their city stands defiantly, waiting for a resolution.

Assessing the gains and losses—victories and defeats—remains complex and unresolved in a war that has not yet concluded. Even if the sounds of artillery and aircraft were to cease in the coming days, the repercussions will profoundly affect Gaza and the West Bank.

This conflict is not just another entry in a long list of wars; it represents a calculated attempt to eradicate an entire people, to obliterate their identity, and to subject them to starvation. Israel has transformed Gaza into a living hell, resulting in the deaths of over 67,000 civilians and devastating much of the city. Regrettably, Hamas’s reckless tactics have inadvertently enabled Israel to fulfill its objectives, leading to widespread destruction, siege, displacement, and hunger for innocent civilians.

The horrific scenes have left a significant impact worldwide, shifting global public opinion and awakening humanitarian sentiments, ultimately fostering unprecedented empathy for the Palestinian cause and bringing it back into mainstream discourse.

Numerous indications suggest that the ongoing war in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023, may be approaching its conclusion within weeks. It is high time for Gaza to find respite, heal its deep wounds, and finally end the suffering caused by the war, moving beyond mere ceasefire terminology to restore a sense of safety without hunger, siege, or the sounds of warfare. The initiative set forth by former U.S. President Donald Trump would not have gained traction without the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and the diplomatic isolation Israel now faces globally, aided by significant efforts from Arab diplomacy in proposing solutions and addressing gaps in the plan. Should the ceasefire efforts succeed fully, with Israel’s troop withdrawal from Gaza and Hamas’s exit, it would represent a considerable achievement that could expedite the pursuit of peace by addressing all underlying causes, ensuring the prevention of future conflicts. This may herald the most significant advancement toward a Palestinian state in decades with both Arab and international support.

The Palestinian people understand that preserving their existence in Gaza and thwarting any displacement plan constitutes a genuine victory for their will. Their steadfastness on their land signifies a collective stance rather than an individual act. Undoubtedly, halting the war would be a true triumph for the populace, signaling that justice and freedom cannot be vanquished and that rights cannot be disregarded, as this conflict has compelled the world to rally in support of Palestine. It is time for this community to exhale with anticipation for a cessation of hostilities and the noise of warfare, allowing Gaza to commence its next battle—the battle for recovery and revitalization, bringing life back to every corner and street.
