Thales Alenia Space of France and the Italian Space Agency announced the signing of a contract to create the first human habitat on the lunar surface as part of the Artemis program. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the French firm and the Italian company Leonardo.
The Artemis program, spearheaded by the United States, is evolving into a massive venture with a multi-billion dollar budget, transforming the lunar surface into a testing ground for future missions to Mars. The project includes numerous private companies and nations at the forefront of the emerging global space race.
Thales stated that the multifunctional habitat model is a critical component for establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon, scheduled for completion by 2033. The company emphasized that it will provide a secure, comfortable, and multifunctional living unit for astronauts, fully compatible with other systems and components.
