Humanitarian Situation in Gaza: Collapse Despite Ceasefire

Humanitarian Crisis Intensifies in Gaza as Aid Restrictions Persist

Humanitarian organizations, including the World Food Programme, UNICEF, and the Red Cross, are sounding the alarm about the worsening situation in Gaza. They warn that the area is on the brink of an even greater disaster unless borders are opened to allow essential aid to flow in. Currently, numerous barriers and Israeli restrictions hinder the movement of humanitarian convoys.

The health scenario is particularly dire, with hospitals operating on dwindling resources and fuel. Thousands of critical cases await medical evacuation, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The organization noted that only a small fraction of the recorded cases have been evacuated in recent days.

According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, “the situation remains catastrophic as the quantities of aid entering Gaza are insufficient.” He expressed concern that, since the ceasefire agreement came into effect on October 10, “hunger is not abating due to food shortages.”

The agreement stipulates the entry of 600 trucks daily; however, only 200 to 300 trucks currently cross the border. Many of the trucks entering Gaza are reportedly commercial vehicles.

While praising the resilience of the ceasefire amidst violations, he cautioned that “the crisis is not over yet and needs are immense.” He further added, “Despite an increase in aid flow, it still meets only a tiny fraction of the needs.”

He highlighted that there are no fully functioning hospitals in Gaza, with only 14 out of 36 still operational. There is a severe shortage of medications, equipment, and essential health personnel. He estimated that the total cost for rebuilding Gaza’s health system would exceed seven billion dollars.

Amidst the ongoing humanitarian collapse in Gaza, political tensions are escalating. This follows the Israeli Knesset’s vote on a bill aimed at annexing the West Bank, which has drawn unprecedented criticism from the United States. American Vice President J.D. Vance described the move as “foolish” and an “insult” to Washington.

Vance’s strong statements came at the end of his recent visit to Israel, shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced plans to visit the country.

At Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport before his departure, Vance remarked that if the vote was “a politically provocative act, it is an extremely foolish one.” He added, “I take this as a personal affront. The Trump administration’s policy is that the West Bank will not be annexed by Israel.”

The dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, which has been almost entirely devastated, coupled with the unclear and chaotic political landscape, as well as repeated Israeli breaches of the ceasefire agreement, creates a complex environment. In such circumstances, the ceasefire appears more like a temporary pause amid a prolonged conflict unless the international community takes concrete steps to pave a path away from this vicious cycle.
