In Gaza, the remnants of homes and streets symbolize more than mere stone and mortar; they embody vibrant memories and serve as witnesses to the joys of families who once thrived amidst their walls. Tragically, these memories have been overshadowed by relentless warfare that has persisted for two years. The destruction has left no home untouched, with every residence displaying signs of damage and ruin. Airstrikes have altered the landscape so dramatically that it is hard to recognize the area.
Mouhammad Murad, for instance, has struggled to identify his home in the Jabalia refugee camp, hoping to recall moments of laughter shared with relatives and friends, but those memories lie buried beneath the rubble.
Murad reflects, “Gaza City was the capital of our beautiful territory, rich with historical sites, modern towers, universities, hotels, restaurants, resorts, and archaeological treasures. The coastline was abundant with resources, yet the war has stripped us of everything.”
He added, “Upon returning to Jabalia, we couldn’t recognize where our home once stood. Life here has changed entirely, and the streets are now fragmented.”
Gaza’s ancient cities, possessing a wealth of archaeological significance, have seen their old streets and unique landscapes turned to ruins amidst the targeting by Israeli forces. This destruction, viewed by Palestinians as a systematic endeavor, is perceived as an attempt to erase Palestinian identity and history. Two years of brutal conflict have altered the squares and public spaces familiar to Gazans, resulting in the collapse of historic balconies that once overlooked the city’s legacy.
Over 375,000 homes, establishments, and cultural landmarks have vanished, seemingly swallowed by the earth. Gaza in wartime is a stark contrast to the Gaza of the past, and the fear will linger long after the fighting subsides. Residents bid farewell to their homes with deep sorrow, casting glances back at their belongings and bedrooms, as if they silently lament, “The war will eventually cease, but who will restore the memories that have been erased, turning into debris and remnants?”
