Israel: The Military Faces Drain Due to the Gaza War

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has revealed significant weaknesses in the material capabilities of the Israeli military, revealing challenges stemming from the prolonged duration of the war and the depletion of combat resources such as tanks, artillery, and armored personnel carriers. A report by the Israeli newspaper Maariv states that the military is struggling with combat readiness due to the ongoing Gaza war and a shortage of spare parts for military equipment.

The report indicates a rise in complaints from soldiers, squad leaders, and even battalion and brigade commanders regarding increasing mechanical failures of tanks and the Namer armored personnel carriers, along with other combat equipment used in Gaza.

Soldiers from the seventh brigade reported difficulties in obtaining spare parts for tanks, noting that essential components are not available in the logistics and technology division’s storage facilities, including shortages of tank engines, tracks, and propulsion systems.

Separately, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that Israel is supporting an armed group in Gaza opposed to Hamas, following remarks from former Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who stated that Israel had provided arms to this group.

In a video posted on social media, Netanyahu commented, “What did Lieberman leak? That security sources activated a group in Gaza that opposes Hamas? What’s wrong with that? It only benefits us; it saves Israeli soldiers’ lives.”

Netanyahu also announced the death of four Israeli soldiers in Gaza, offering condolences to their families, and revealed the names of two of them: Sergeant Yoav Raver and reserve sergeant Chen Gross.

Meanwhile, health authorities in Gaza reported that 16 Palestinians were killed by Israeli army fire in the area yesterday, attributing some fatalities to airstrikes in Jabalia, Al-Tuffah, and Khan Younis. A child was also reported killed by Israeli army gunfire in the northwestern part of Khan Younis.

Witnesses and medics reported that Israeli planes and tanks intensified their strikes on Jabalia and the neighboring Beit Hanoun from early in the morning. Israeli military spokesperson Avichai Adraee announced on social media that the army had ordered residents in some residential areas in northern Gaza to evacuate.

Additionally, five Palestinians were killed by Israeli army fire near an American aid distribution center west of Rafah in southern Gaza. According to Palestinian news agency reports, Israeli forces opened fire on citizens gathered at the aid distribution point in the Al-Alam area, leading to multiple casualties.

Requests for Media Access

In related news, over 130 media outlets and organizations dedicated to journalist protection have urged Israel to allow international press access to Gaza immediately and unconditionally, following a restriction on foreign reporters from entering the area since October 7, 2023, with some exceptions.

The signatories of the letter, organized by Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists, stated, “For the past 20 months, Israeli authorities have prevented foreign journalists from independently accessing the region, which is unprecedented in the history of modern armed conflicts.”

The letter has been endorsed by figures including Phil Chetwynd, news director at Agence France-Presse, and Julie Pace, director of the Associated Press, along with Aluf Ben, editor-in-chief of Haaretz.

Humanitarian Aid Suspension

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has temporarily closed all its aid distribution centers in the Gaza Strip. The organization stated in a message posted on its Facebook page that the closure was due to safety reasons, advising residents to stay away from its facilities. Later on, the organization reported that it had managed to distribute aid despite initially announcing the closure.
