Yesterday, Dubai kicked off the sixth annual conference of the Emirates Oncology Society, attracting over 700 doctors, researchers, and specialists in cancer treatment from 20 countries. The main focus of the event was to explore the latest advancements in clinical and scientific trends in oncology, including the announcement of a new oral treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer within the country.
Professor Hamid bin Harmal Al Shamsi, the president of the society and head of the conference, emphasized that the event showcases the UAE’s leadership role in supporting medical research and innovation in the field of cancer treatment. He noted that the conference serves as a significant scientific platform for discussing the latest therapies and innovations aimed at enhancing patient outcomes and their quality of life. He also highlighted how the adoption of cutting-edge treatment technologies is improving healthcare quality in the nation.
Cancer Prevalence Factors
According to Professor Hamid bin Harmal Al Shamsi, breast, colorectal, and thyroid cancers are the most prevalent types of cancer in the UAE. He pointed out that statistics reveal an increase in diagnosed cases, not just in the UAE, but also across the Gulf region and globally. This rise can be attributed to several key factors, including lifestyle changes, various forms of smoking, increased obesity rates due to poor dietary habits, and reliance on fast food.
He stressed that adhering to healthy practices, maintaining an ideal weight, and undergoing regular check-ups form the first line of defense in cancer prevention. He affirmed that early detection can contribute to treating more than 90% of cases. The early screening programs for breast cancer in the UAE have successfully identified numerous cases at early stages, directly benefiting recovery rates.
The conference is being held in collaboration with the Emirates Medical Association and with support from the Ministry of Health and Prevention, featuring a selection of top experts and doctors from the region and internationally.
The scientific agenda includes over fifty sessions led by approximately 120 speakers covering various cancer types, alongside specialized workshops and an exhibition featuring global pharmaceutical companies.
Attending the opening ceremony were Dr. Younes Kazem, Acting Executive Director of the Health Regulation Sector at the Dubai Health Authority, Dr. Aida Al Awadi, Chair of the Scientific Committee for the conference, and Dr. Suzan Jafar, Chair of the Board of the Friends of Cancer Patients Society.
The sessions on the first day addressed the role of multidisciplinary medical teams in the UAE.
The Emirates Oncology Society honored 24 researchers from around the globe in recognition of their scientific contributions to cancer research. Additionally, the late Dr. Mohammed Al Ali, a pioneer in oncology in the region, received posthumous recognition alongside several cancer survivors, emphasizing their bravery.
A Rising Star
One of the highlights of the conference was the story shared by 12-year-old Hamdan Al Falasi from Dubai, who proudly spoke of his journey as a “cancer warrior” celebrating his victory over the disease.
His tumultuous journey began when he was only nine years old. His mother recounted the alarming onset of symptoms: persistent fever and a frail body that could barely support itself. Their home transformed into a realm of worry, leading to a diagnosis from Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital: leukemia.
In a moment that could have frozen many in fear, this young champion chose not to panic. “I did not panic,” Hamdan reiterated to the audience, affirming that courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to face life despite it. He and his mother traveled to London, enduring a grueling ten months of treatment.
His mother candidly described the ordeal: “I felt the fear and anxiety for my little one,” but she expressed her gratitude: “Thank God, he has been healed.”
Hamdan’s powerful message resonated clearly: “My presence today highlights the crucial role of early screening in the recovery journey.”
