Macron Anticipates Resumption of UN Sanctions Against Iran

On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed the likelihood that European powers would reinstate international sanctions on Iran by the end of September, citing Tehran’s lack of seriousness in ongoing negotiations with European countries.

The United Kingdom, France, and Germany, collectively referred to as the European troika, initiated a 30-day process at the end of August aimed at reinstating United Nations sanctions.

These three nations set specific conditions that Iran must meet this month to convince the troika to postpone the “sanctions re-imposition mechanism.”

The proposal from the trio includes a potential six-month delay in reinstating sanctions to allow for serious negotiations, contingent upon Iran granting UN nuclear inspectors access to its nuclear sites and engaging in discussions with the United States.

Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency are expected to investigate Iran’s substantial stockpile of enriched uranium.

When asked during an interview with Israeli Channel 12 if sanctions would be implemented, Macron replied, “Yes, I believe so because the latest news from the Iranians is not serious.”

On Wednesday, foreign ministers from the three countries, the Iranian counterpart, and the EU foreign policy chief held a telephone conversation.

Diplomats have indicated that little progress has been made, although the opportunity for a potential agreement remains open before the deadline expires.

The United Nations Security Council, composed of 15 members, is scheduled to vote on Friday regarding a resolution that would permanently lift UN sanctions imposed on Iran, an action that the Council must take following the troika’s initiation of their process.

Diplomats have suggested that the resolution is unlikely to receive the minimum of nine votes required for approval, and if it does pass, the United States, the UK, or France may exercise their veto power.
