Israel responded sternly to French President Emmanuel Macron’s criticisms regarding its actions in Gaza, even accusing him of “supporting Hamas.” Macron reiterated his calls for increased pressure on Israel over the humanitarian situation in the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Macron of siding with a “terrorist organization” after the French president condemned the blockade on aid entering Gaza. In a statement from his office, Netanyahu expressed, “Once again, Macron has chosen to align himself with a murderous terrorist organization and to echo the propaganda of this despicable group while making false accusations against Israel.”
He further commented, “Instead of supporting the democratic Western camp that fights against terrorist organizations and calls for the release of hostages, Macron insists that Israel capitulate and reward terrorism.” Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz added that Macron should “not lecture us on morality.”
In his statement, Katz remarked, “We remember very well what the Jews in France endured when they were unable to defend themselves; President Macron should not lecture us on morality.”
On Tuesday, Macron had described the actions of Netanyahu’s government in Gaza as “unacceptable” and “shameful.” He characterized the situation in Gaza as an “unacceptable humanitarian tragedy” and criticized the Israeli blockade that has prevented the entry of “all the aid sent by France and other countries.” Macron called for the European Union to intensify its pressure on Israel regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
