The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the UAE has officially approved the design for the nation’s inaugural hybrid heliport, located at the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal situated at Zayed Port, as announced on Wednesday.
This site has been selected due to its strategic position at the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal, a key center for the regional cruise sector, hosting over 650,000 visitors annually.
Developed in partnership with AD Ports Group, Falcon Aviation Services, and Archer Aviation, this hybrid heliport marks a significant advancement towards a more integrated and sustainable air transportation system within the emirate.
This facility is noteworthy as it is the first in the UAE designed to facilitate both standard helicopters and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, such as Archer’s Midnight, providing a versatile model for urban air mobility.
The heliport is envisioned as part of Archer’s extensive infrastructure framework across the UAE, with initial commercial air taxi operations anticipated in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Aviation (ADA).
According to a statement from the GCAA, “This hybrid heliport will act as a vital starting point for the upcoming Abu Dhabi Air Taxi service, set to be launched by 2026, connecting major areas of the city with efficient, silent air transport options.”
In a recent interview, Archer, the developer of the ‘Midnight’ flying taxi, expressed a willingness to utilize existing infrastructure like helipads to expand service coverage across the capital.
Nikhil Goel, the chief commercial officer of Archer Aviation, remarked, “Currently, over 70 helipads exist in Abu Dhabi. This presents a tremendous opportunity, and I believe there’s no need for new infrastructure development to make this viable. Our strategy is to utilize the existing helipads and incorporate electrification into those facilities, allowing for a quick launch and rapid scale-up with limited investment.”
He also mentioned that Archer is poised to begin test flights of the ‘Midnight’ taxi this summer in Abu Dhabi.
Regulatory Framework
The GCAA has announced that it is the world’s first civil aviation authority to establish regulatory guidelines for hybrid infrastructure. This groundbreaking set of standards is intended to ensure the safe, efficient, and interoperable operation of both helicopters and eVTOLs from a single facility.
The draft standards are nearing completion and are expected to be published by July 2025, representing a crucial step toward incorporating advanced air mobility into current aviation frameworks, as noted by the GCAA.
“By collaborating closely with Archer, AD Ports Group, and Falcon Aviation Services, we are paving the way for a future where sustainable and advanced air transport is integral to our urban environments. This approval signifies a new chapter in civil aviation, driven by cooperation and foresight,” stated Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director-general of GCAA.
Adam Goldstein, CEO and co-founder of Archer, emphasized, “Utilizing existing aviation infrastructure is fundamental to our launch strategy. It enables us to act swiftly and safely, preparing essential infrastructure ahead of our scheduled commercial air taxi operations.”
The Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal at Zayed Port serves as one of the entry points to the city’s famous cultural and recreational sites, offering convenient access to attractions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Saadiyat Cultural District. Falcon Aviation Services conducts scenic helicopter tours from this location, allowing visitors to view the city’s iconic landmarks from above.
