Sharjah: One Fatality and Five Injuries in Al Nahda Building Blaze; Evacuated Residents Await Return

The number of fatalities from a fire that ignited Sunday morning in a high-rise building located in Sharjah’s Al Nahda neighborhood has climbed to five. Among the deceased are four unidentified individuals who tragically fell to their deaths while trying to escape the flames. Additionally, a Pakistani man in his forties succumbed to cardiac arrest, believed to be a result of the stress from the crisis.

The fire started on the 44th floor of the residential building, resulting in six individuals suffering serious injuries, with one resident reported to have difficulty breathing due to smoke inhalation. The injured victims are currently being treated at Al Qassimi Hospital, where their conditions are now deemed stable.

Emergency response teams acted swiftly, yet the blaze resulted in the unfortunate deaths of four individuals who fell from the structure in their efforts to escape. Their remains were discovered severely burned. Authorities have confirmed that the Pakistani victim did not sustain burns but collapsed due to the shock of the incident.

The Sharjah Civil Defence reported that the fire alarm was triggered at 11:30 am. Fire response teams from various stations promptly arrived at the location, conducted an evacuation of residents, and successfully managed to control the blaze.

Cooling operations were concluded by 7 pm, after which the site was transferred to police for further investigation. The precise cause of the fire has yet to be identified, and an inquiry has commenced to investigate the incident.

Witnesses noted that significant smoke was billowing from the building, prompting authorities to secure the area for public safety.

During a visit to the site, evacuated residents were seen waiting to regain access to their homes, while others waited outside in cafes and restaurants for permission to return.

Latter in the evening, residents were gradually allowed back into their apartments, though access to the floors above the 30th level remains restricted until safety inspections are completed.

Officials assured that temporary accommodations would be provided for families unable to return home. Further updates will follow as the site becomes fully secured and investigators can evaluate the extent of the damage.

Eyewitnesses indicated that the fire originated from the top two floors of the building, which is situated across from Sahara Centre and is one of the tallest structures in the emirate.

“We witnessed the officials responding promptly and managing the evacuation process. Tenants were waiting in nearby cafes and restaurants, hopeful to return to their homes, which appeared unaffected. I trust they will be permitted to return soon,” remarked a café owner situated a block away from the building.

A local shopkeeper noted that numerous families reside in the tower.

Traffic detours are still in effect around the area to support emergency response operations and maintain public safety.

In a separate incident, another fire was reported the same day at a fruit and vegetable warehouse in Sharjah’s industrial zone 15. This fire was successfully controlled, according to the emirate’s civil defence authority.
