Taylor Momsen Reflects on ‘Ungrateful’ Label Amid ‘Gossip Girl’ Exit

Taylor Momsen recently opened up about her career transition from acting to music during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast. She discussed the challenges she faced while trying to leave her role on Gossip Girl, a show that brought her significant fame but also left her feeling constrained.

In her conversation with host Alex Cooper, Momsen reflected on her decision to depart from Gossip Girl in its fourth season. Playing the character Jenny Humphrey, she expressed that the choice was not made lightly, as it marked a significant turning point in her life. Despite her desire to follow her passion in music, Momsen faced considerable pushback from executives at Warner Bros. Television.

Describing her experience, she shared that ending her contract was a complicated process. The actress recounted feeling suffocated by the demands of the show and shared that she was labeled “ungrateful” by studio executives for wanting to leave. Momsen’s determination to pursue music ultimately resulted in a lengthy struggle to escape the contract. She stated, “It was a very long battle of me arguing with everyone… Get me outta this. I can’t do this anymore.”

When negotiations with the studio became particularly difficult, Momsen turned to showrunners Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz for assistance. Although they could not release her from her contract, they offered a solution by writing her character out of the series altogether. She acknowledged their help, saying, “They did not have to [help me], and they wrote me out of the show so I could go on tour and be in a band.”

While she had acting experience prior to Gossip Girl, most notably in films like How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Spy Kids 2, Momsen’s true passion lay in music. After stepping away from the show to pursue her music career, she made a brief return to Gossip Girl for the series finale in 2012. Momsen expressed the importance of reuniting with the cast, stating, “As a fan of television… you want to full-circle that and round it out.”

Fans of Momsen and the series may find her journey both inspiring and relatable, as she balances the challenges of a public career with the pursuit of personal passions. Her revelations highlight the complexities artists often face in navigating the entertainment industry while staying true to themselves.
