In a move that highlights educators’ recognition of the need to utilize summer breaks for skill development, teachers and specialists have launched virtual summer programs. These initiatives aim to enhance reading and writing abilities, foster technical and creative skills, raise environmental awareness, and cultivate cultural and artistic talents, effectively transforming the summer holiday from a period of inactivity into a productive space for learning and honing talents, thus preparing a generation capable of thriving in a knowledge-based world.
These initiatives reflect a broader trend towards integrating technology into the educational process, encouraging self-directed learning among students, and promoting a culture of sustainability. Research shows that prolonged breaks from schooling without cognitive engagement can negatively impact academic achievement.
Educator Dr. Rania Madi implemented a virtual summer program focused on enhancing reading skills, which are fundamental to academic success and serve as a gateway to gaining new knowledge.
The program was designed to improve students’ reading comprehension and speed through interactive digital activities based on specialized educational platforms, such as “Read in Arabic” and “Start in Arabic,” which feature extensive digital libraries categorized by student levels.
Additionally, it included exercises to cultivate analytical and inferential skills. The activities and materials were shared via electronic educational platforms, making them accessible to students across different educational stages, allowing for flexible access to content anytime and anywhere, alongside ongoing teacher monitoring for performance evaluation and support.
Over 1,800 students participated in the program, which led to noticeable educational outcomes reflected in student performance. Participants showed enhanced abilities in text analysis and comprehension of meanings, along with a significant improvement in reading speed tailored to their varying levels.
This enhancement contributed to an overall increase in their academic proficiency, with the program also encouraging students to engage in free reading through gradually leveled content, thereby fostering a love for reading and turning it into an enjoyable daily activity rather than a school obligation. It reinforced the idea that conscious reading is the true gateway to innovation and creativity.
Meanwhile, educator Dr. Rania Mohammed oversaw a 20-day summer camp from July 14 to August 10, which welcomed 1,040 participants, including students and adults, guided by 46 instructors who conducted 49 workshops, 45 of which were virtual and 4 in-person sessions.
The workshops covered various cultural and creative topics such as creative writing, book authorship, video production, and included sustainable environmental activities like recycling and creating handmade products from reused materials.
Additionally, the camp featured discussion sessions aimed at organizing ideas and time management, enhancing students’ personal productivity. It provided an opportunity for students to address rich topics that helped them realign their thoughts and encouraged them to utilize their break for innovative and sustainable projects.
In a related initiative, Dr. Laila Ahmad Mohammed provided summer training workshops through the “Training a Million Teachers” platform, which engaged over 200 students. These workshops focused on interactive digital games and applications powered by artificial intelligence, aimed at making learning more enjoyable and effective.
The workshops sought to familiarize students and teachers with the latest technological tools supporting the development of reading, writing, and problem-solving skills, training them on smart educational applications and games that stimulate creativity and bolster critical thinking. This led to improved academic performance and encouraged students to embrace self-directed learning.
Additionally, educator Dr. Abdul Latif Al-Siyabi continued his “Book Recycling” initiative for the sixth consecutive season, supporting the UAE’s national strategy for achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and ensuring a sustainable future for future generations.
This initiative focused on encouraging community participation in environmental conservation, raising environmental awareness among various groups, and promoting sustainable behaviors, with 291 participants, including 168 students and 123 parents from different schools within the emirate.
Al-Siyabi emphasized, “Our role as educators is crucial in changing individual behaviors. Through education, we can instill sustainable habits in youth, equipping them with critical thinking and problem-solving skills to make informed decisions regarding environmental conservation.”
Emirati Quality
In this vein, educator Suha Shaasha, in collaboration with several teachers, launched the second season of the “Emirati Quality” initiative as a unique summer activity after students completed their exams. She explained that the initiative’s first year concentrated on enhancing Arabic and English language skills, as well as life skills, leadership, and design. In its second season, the initiative expanded to encompass a broader range of creative and diversified fields, including media, content creation, fine arts, music, programming, and artificial intelligence.
The initiative also covered research within the “Roots of Knowledge” framework and the motto “Ambitions Towards Great Heights,” attracting around 1,600 students to participate in its workshops over the six-day duration.
