The Union Pact: An Enduring Milestone in National History

The UAE is celebrating the first anniversary of the “Union Covenant Day,” which is observed annually on July 18. This occasion was officially designated as a national event by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to serve as a moment for renewing loyalty and commitment to the nation.

This day holds significant importance in reinforcing national awareness among all community members regarding the pivotal steps that led to the establishment of a state that not only focused on national building and development but also aspired to excel on both regional and global stages.

The UAE has built a competitive foundation that ensures its leadership and distinction with strength and capability. On this day, the UAE reflects on the unforgettable historical moments that paved the way for the dream of unity.

This dream was nurtured for many years by the late founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his fellow rulers of the Emirates, culminating in the historic meeting of 1971, which saw the signing of the union document and the country’s constitution.

This day, etched in the national memory, signifies a new chapter in the nation’s history, during which the declaration of the union and the official name of the United Arab Emirates were announced. This represented a primary milestone in the blessed journey of establishing the union on December 2, 1971, following relentless efforts, sincere negotiations, and continuous meetings that shaped the epic of building the union.

Such national occasions reinforce values of loyalty, belonging, and national identity, while also reviving the inspiring beginnings of the union journey, prompting reflection on the sacrifices and wise visions provided by the founders.
