UAE Approves First Global Treatment for Immune Thrombocytopenia Disorder

The Emirates Drug Foundation has announced the approval of “Rilzabrutinib,” the first oral inhibitor of the enzyme proton tyrosine kinase for treating immune thrombocytopenia, a rare autoimmune disorder that affects between 2 to 5 individuals per 100,000 globally.

This milestone is a global first, highlighting the UAE’s leadership in hastening the availability of innovative treatments and addressing medical needs for patients.

The significance of this drug’s approval is profound, as it provides patients with immune thrombocytopenia in the UAE and the surrounding region an early opportunity to access an innovative treatment, potentially enhancing their treatment journey and improving their quality of life.

This step is aligned with the nation’s unwavering commitment to attracting and providing advanced high-efficacy treatments in accordance with the highest global standards and therapeutic protocols.

Developed by the pharmaceutical company “Sanofi,” Rilzabrutinib represents a novel therapeutic approach aimed at restoring immune system balance and addressing the underlying causes of the disease. By achieving this and increasing platelet counts, the medication targets both the symptoms and root causes of the condition.

Clinical trials have demonstrated promising results, with patients experiencing significant health improvements.

Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, the General Director of the Emirates Drug Foundation, emphasized that this approval reflects the country’s dedication to providing the latest global treatments. It also solidifies the UAE’s status as a leading hub in accelerating the availability of innovative medications. This achievement is part of the foundation’s strategy to enhance pharmaceutical security, adopt advanced therapeutic protocols, and streamline regulatory processes in collaboration with international partners.

She noted that this success illustrates the proactive policies of the UAE in creating a flexible regulatory environment that supports innovation and facilitates patient access to advanced treatments. The Emirates Drug Foundation continues its efforts to expedite regulatory processes and enhance international cooperation, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a regional center for pharmaceutical innovation.

The foundation is focused on adopting a proactive approach based on innovation and global partnerships to ensure the provision of effective and safe treatment options that meet the highest international standards while enhancing the readiness of the healthcare system to keep pace with rapid scientific advancements.

On her part, Preeti Fotenani, General Director of Specialized Care at Sanofi for Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region, expressed her happiness with the fruitful collaboration with the Emirates Drug Foundation to bring this innovative treatment to patients suffering from immune thrombocytopenia, reaffirming the joint commitment to provide advanced therapeutic solutions that meet urgent medical needs.
